In the 42nd edition of the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda has introduced the concept of urban car with the model EV-N, 2011 Honda N Box Concept. Honda N Box is a new vehicle and tend to be more severe than the ones they replace, even if they stay the same dimensions. Most of the time, the reason is that manufacturers try to improve their vehicle security credentials and amenities with a negative impact on body weight and fuel consumption.

According to the Nikkei business daily newspaper, Honda will soon join the pack as it plans to change the design and assembly methods to reduce vehicle weight ‘without making any compromise in safety or comfort features. Nikkei reported that Japan’s third-largest producer will invest tens of billions of yen to update both local and foreign plants, starting with the smallest model in the range. The newspaper added that some new method of Honda’s manufacturing including welding outside panels to the frame of the vehicle instead of assembling the ceiling, side panels and the rest, in order to reduce the use of bolts and reinforcing material.

In fact, Honda has modified one of two assembly lines at the Suzuka factory in Japan that produces BOX N, the first model of the N Series mini car. This step is said to have reduced the weight of cars by 10 percent compared with the model of equivalent size, while also lowering production costs.
